I'd like to take a minute to post something I actually found on another blog by another English teacher here in Korea. Pretty funny....and much more sarcastic than I ever come off while writing.

" Ain't that just romantic? "

Today is "White Day", which would be more accurately named: "Holiday exactly the same as Valentine's day, except the men purchase chocolate this time, instead of women." Clearly, the reason to call this fake holiday White Day is probably more reasonable than my suggested name, but it doesn't make anything involved in the Holiday more legitimate in my eyes.

Legit or not, I still had to purchase boatloads of candy to "repay" all the candy I was given on Valentine's day that I didn't actually eat. It's a vicious cycle of tooth decay, hyper activity, and blood sugar levels skyrocketing out of control. It's the one day I am allowed to spoil the excellent girls in my classes, and I wasn't going to ruin it for them by giving everyone candy.

I forewent actual "class" today, as most of the girls in class were so hopped up on sugar that trying to force them to consider something mundane like phonics was too much to possibly ask for. The boys were too pissed off about not getting candy that they didn't want to study either. "Hey, why fight it?" I reasoned, and set aside today as a game day.

While White day is nice because you get to guage your purchases depending on what you recieved the previous month. But, "going second" also raises the stakes as well. Women set the bar on Valentine's day for which a man returning her affection must top with his purchases on White Day. One of my student said that a male friend she knew spent 120,000 Won (100 Dollars!) on chocolates for four friends of hers in middle school.

I know when I purchase candy for someone else, I usually buy in according to my tastes if I don't know theirs. Next year I'm going to keep a list of everything everyone gives me on Valentine's day, then give them the exact thing back with new wrappings, or perhaps I can engineer a grand swap, freeing me from having to purchase any more candy and chocolate for the rest of the year. Can't blame a guy for trying, right?
